Effective ways of making money online?...

So how do I make money online?

There are many, many ways of making money online, some easier than others. Within this article I hope to go through every single method of making money from the very best right down to the very worst. Some are more effective than others i.e. one may earn you more money but require more effort, while others offer little money very quickly etc... OK, let's start off.

Some tips before I start

Making money is not easy, some of these methods below require a lot of hard work in order to get full benefit from them. My advice to you is to read each everything I have wrote below carefully, read the benefits and drawbacks and find what you think will suit you best. Some pay more than others but require more work/effort and even investment while others are free but require time and a little effort. The key is to 'stick to the program' Now before you start, I want to ask you "what are you looking for?"

  • To replace your job
  • To pay off some debt
  • To become rich
  • Some extra cash

Once you have thought about that, you are free to read on :)  We are going to start off with paid surveys.

Paid surveys
(Rating: 4/10)

Definitely the most common way of making money online, most company's which supply you with the survey have a 'point' system which can be redeemed for cash, other company's just pay you immediately in cash.  On average each survey takes around 20 - 40 mins and you can get paid from $0.1 from anything unto $10 a survey.

The good: Paid surveys offer cash almost immediately, it's fast easy to sign up and can earn you a quick buck.

The bad: One of the major drawbacks of paid surveys is the time it takes to complete a survey, on top of that most users find it very hard to qualify for the survey (this varies based on supplier) which is not only annoying but causes problems as this can happen at the end of the survey also.

Conclusion: I'd only recommend paid surveys if you have a lot of free time and patience, some of the surveys you get are incredibly boring and seem to last for ever.

  • Typical income per month from paid surveys: $200/300 (based off of 1 hour a day)
  • Investment needed None

Here are some links to some popular paid survey sites I know of:

A quick note: some agencies which offer you surveys for cash require you to pay a small fee to join, these offer higher pay as a result but require a payment from you.

Affiliate marketing
(Rating 8/10)

Affiliate marketing is when you are given a product from a company i.e. a website,  and you are asked to either promote it i.e. refer friends to it or sell the product to them in return you are paid either cash, items or discounts. The most amazing thing about affiliate marketing is it has huge potential some have made $1000s even $10,000s. Affiliate marketing is definitely the best paid way on the internet of getting money quickly.

The good:  Can earn you a steady income if you know what your doing, if you are good you can even become a millionaire, some company's offer you a lot of neat tools also which is a bonus and does help.

The bad: Some company's require you to make an investment before you can start - while others do not pay in cash. Another thing to point out is you really need to know how to 'sell' in order to be a success here, although some company's already 'give' you the content to use i.e. a promotional site where you refer friends.

Conclusion: I can safely say affiliate marketing holds the biggest bag and can earn you the most money hands down, the only downside is the small investments needed as well as the fact you can't really be successful if you can't sell although other company's make it easier than others by giving you tools and training to use.

  • Typical income per month based off of affiliate marketing: $600 - $30,000
  • Investment needed Roughly $10 a month

Note: This is based off of 2 years of building/promoting and assuming you have a website/landing page/traffic

Here are some of the most popular affiliate marketing systems I am aware of:

Selling goods online
(Rating: 6.5/10)

Now, thanks to the internet it is possible to sell your unwanted goods to others. I myself am not too keen on this as it requires a lot of 'effort' as some selling sites do not allow you to sell some brands of item which may cause problems. Another problem is it can take a huge amount of time to get signed up, putting pictures of the product up so everyone can see, shipping and packaging as well as possible damage which could also be a problem. I'd recommend trying this if you have a house full of 'junk' it is a great way to get some space back! Some people even start their own business online which is a good idea and has made a lot of rich people as a result.

The good: A great way to get back some space, also good if you can't afford a 'shop' and would like to sell goods without investment. Most of the sites which offer these services are free also.

The bad: One huge downside is the time it takes to 'set up' the item your selling i.e. taking pictures, uploading pictures as well as writing the description. One other drawback is there is no guarantee the item will get to the customer with no damage (unless they pick it up themselves)

Conclusion: Definitely a must for people who can't afford to start up a business offline, a great way to get rid of unwanted items too.

  • typical income per month: $100 - $2000
  • Investment needed Roughly: None

Here are some of the common selling sites that I am aware of:

On a side note, some people make their own site and use what is called 'widgets' or other similar tools to sell their items instead. This is a slightly harder way of going about it as you have to drive traffic to your site which takes time, but can pay off as you may also want to register with adverting company's (such as Google Adsence) and make money off people who click your links. If you are interested in setting up your own site there are some free tools I'd recommend Yola.  In regard to building traffic you can find an article here which explains how to build traffic to your site.

Amazon 'mechanical Turk a.k.a 'HITs'
(Rating 6/10)

A 'HIT' is a system implanted by Amazon. It allows people to find tasks or to submit them, for example if a website developer wanted someone to spell check their site they would put up a 'HIT' which allows 'workers' (you) to go ahead and do that and get paid for it. The highest I've seen is $20 so far. One thing i don't like about this is the fact your work must be 'approved'  which means your work could get rejected making it a waste of time doing it in the first place. I've tried a handful of 'HITs' and have earned around $3.20 so far. Its a nice little system and worth checking out at least.

The good: A lot faster than paid surveys in terms of cash and time,  loads of work to do - it is 100% free also which is nice, painless sign up very fast.

The bad: Risk of work being 'rejected'  some HITs require a test, while others have already been completed and stills how up which is annoying.

Conclusion: A very fast way to earn some quick cash in your own time, the only drawback is sometimes work you can do isn't always there (already completed but shows up). It is worth a check out though they have a lot to offer.

  • typical income per month (based off 1 hour a day) $300 - $800
  • Investment needed Roughly None
Buying and selling domains
(Rating 4.2/10)

The .com gold rush maybe over but there are still Loads of great domains out there. One of most common way to make money off of domains is to buy an expired .com/.net/.co.uk  cheap and then 'do it up' and resell it for profit.  The only real drawback is you are not guaranteed to get your money back. Another idea might be to try and find content which is lacking on big search engines like Google, Yahoo etc.. and 'make' that content, which earns you instant traffic which you can use to make a nice sum of money from  Adsence for example.

The good: Has as much potential as affiliate marketing, however requires more investment (unless you use a free domain, see bottom of page) and more money but at least doesn't require 'selling skills'. If you are keen enough and have a lot of free time on your hands you could be making around $700 - $8,000 a month.

The bad: Requires a hell of a lot of time,  to setup a site and you do need to know a little about how 'traffic' and search engines work to be successful here.

Conclusion: It pays off in time but is so much work and maintenance to keep running. I only recommend going into this area if you are motivated, I also think having a passion for something i.e. sport would be of great use also. Write a website on that and begin building traffic from that. Once you are done with that you can start putting ads on your site and getting 'income' from those.

The best 'ads' I think are from Google. You can sign unto Google absence here.

  • typical income per month: $2000 - $4000 ($100 - $300)
  • Investment needed Roughly $60 - $80 a month ($5 - $10/$20 if buying traffic)

Note: This is if you were to buy domains "do them up" and resell them.
Note: Red text is you keeping the website and promoting it with ads/referral links based off of 6k views a month. If you plan on making your own website, why not sign up for  an affiliate program which sells websites, so you can make money by referring people and get a domain too? If you are interested click here

FAQ: But I can get a domain for free, why should I pay for one? Click here for the benefits and drawbacks of free domains and paid for domains.

The best 'free' website builders I know of are:

On a side note it may also be a good idea to combine my the idea above regarding selling online - building a website about for example football then having a page which sells football goods i.e. shirts. If you don't know how to build websites I have a page here which explains how to build an effective and attractive looking website.

Video blogging
(Rating 5.5/10)

So far, I have only seen YouTube do this, but I know some other video hosting sites do it - However YouTube seems to be the best due to its popularity and massive client base. Video blogging works like website blogging however instead of writing it you 'say' it via camera or microphone. The way people make money from this is to register with YouTubes partnership program which allows ads to be placed on your videos. Now depending on how many views/clicks you get depends on how much money you get paid.

The good: It is probably the most enjoyable and particle way of making money - If you get really popular you could start earning a lot more but nothing amazing.

The bad: The money isn't great and they are picky about their partners.

Conclusion: Its a great hobby. Although you don't earn much if you enjoy doing something such as making music it is defiantly something you should look into.

  • typical income per month (based off 2 videos a day) $80 - $120
  • Investment needed Roughly None

Note: If you invested in traffic (buying/promoting) see this page you could add unto $100 on top

Side note: You could also make your own music and upload it, anything which is your own qualities for the YouTube partnership program. If you are stuck for ideas on video blogging or would like some ideas or tips you can visit this page for some helpful ideas. Some company's pay you to upload this isn't really video blogging as your just promoting a video but you can turn it into video blogging here are some sites that pay per view:

Website blogging

(Rating 5.6/10)

Just like the above, website blogging works like video blogging only it is written. As strange as it sounds website blogging holds greater potential than video blogging at making money although the amount you make can be very high (around $10 - $3000) The only way you can really earn that sort of money is by updating your blog daily and work on driving traffic to it. I have a page here which can get you started on website blogging.

The good: Slow to build up a blog and slow way of making money but does pay off, great if you have a passion for something i.e. sports.

The bad: It takes time to start earning money off of your blog and does require work to keep it updated.

Conclusion: Worth a shot if you have a passion for something (hobby) and would like to share it with the rest of the world then I recommend it.

  • typical income per month (based off 2 videos a day) $100 - $300
  • Investment needed Roughly free - $10

Note: based off 100 subscribers and around 30k views (week)

Here are some great blogging sites:

Online jobs
(Rating 4.9/10)

Just like there is offline, you can apply for jobs online too. Typical jobs range from data inputting, subtitling videos to more advanced jobs such as game programing, website designing and programing. You can do your cash in hand jobs but the best paid ones I think are contract based jobs. The benefit of doing online job work is the cash is instant and doesn't really require any effort in terms of building traffic or promoting. Some company's will only employ people who are local while others will only employ people who have a qualification and may even ask for proof while others anyone can apply for.

The good: works the same as a HIT (above) but tends to be a lot more professional and higher paying, offers quick cash much more effective than paid surveys and HITs, no promoting or traffic building needed. A great hobby too.

The bad: Some high paying jobs online are held back by contracts which means they are hard to get out of, others require skill i.e. programing. Some low end jobs i.e. data inputting are not great paying options either.

Conclusion:  I'd say this is a gamble, you may get lucky and find something you enjoy doing such as becoming a GM for a game or blogging, I'd really not recommend this option there are much better ways of making money online.

Some job sites:

The conclusion

It really depends on how much time you have, what effort your willing to put into it and how much money you are willing to invest obviously the more time you spend and money you invest the greater the output and bigger the outcome.

The free option

the best way to make your income online without investment would either be paid surveys or video blogging. In terms of time and money, paid surveys offer faster money at less time while video blogging offers more money over greater time.

Advantage: Free, no investment needed, instant cash
Disadvantage: Little cash made, slow

Side note: 'If you would like to get started with video blogging but don't know how to start off, I have a guide here to get you on your way!'

The paid option

This options requires investment (around $10 - $30 /month/lifetime depending on what you do)  however the benefits are endless! This option has the best potential in terms of making money, you could easily be earning over $1000 if you do this correctly. If you are considering this option I have a small guide here.

Advantage: Holds the biggest potential, a lot of company's offer tools which greatly help you in promoting
Disadvantage: Requires investment,  time is needed if you don't know how affiliate marketing works (often people self train)

The middle option

This option is great for those who want to make money without any needed skills i.e. building websites, selling, promoting etc... All you do here is sign unto a selling site such as Ebay and start listing/selling your goods to people across the world.  I recommend this if you don't really want to try anything else listed above and just want to stay simple, just want some space or start up your own business.

Thank you for reading my article on how to make money online! If you have any further questions or ideas please feel free to contact me. Here. For a list of 'advanced' ways of making money click here.  What do I mean by advanced? - By advanced I mean requires more skill/motivation i.e. something you really need to stick at. The benefits of advanced money making is in the long run they can really pay off and start earning you loads of money, the downside is it is something you really need to work at.
